The JWST-SUSPENSE program

Spectroscopic Ultradeep Survey Probing Extragalactic Near-infrared Stellar Emission

Program overview

The SUSPENSE program is a 16 hour Cycle 1 JWST medium resolution spectroscopic program conducted in January 2024 with a single NIRSpec/MSA pointing. The aim of the program is to study the (resolved) chemical, stellar, and kinematic properties of massive quiescent galaxies at cosmic noon. The SUSPENSE program is executed in the area covered by the UltraVISTA, COSMOS, and COSMOS-DASH surveys, and the sample consists of 20 quiescent galaxies at z = 1—3, when the universe was 2 to 5 billion years old. The spectra of SUSPENSE are of unprecedented depth, and show numerous Balmer and metal absorption features for all quiescent galaxies in the sample.

Overview of the NIRSpec rest-frame spectra for the quiescent galaxies in the SUSPENSE survey. The dashed lines mark prominent emission, absorption, and Balmer features in the spectra.
